Amado is one of the New World s greatest writers, and deserves to be in the classic literature category, although Tieta is not one of his best books Dona Antonieta Esteves Cantarelli, aka Tieta, the prodigal daughter, returns to her provincial hometown as a wealthy woman to find that not much has changed neither the tropical beaches, nor the backwoods chauvinism, nor her mercenary family In a parallel plot, the idealistic young city manager and de facto mayor works to bring a profitable in Amado [...]

possibly the gender politics are of the place and time, but I am of neither, and i did not enjoy this novel as much as his others tieta is indeed a strong female, but her story is enabled by men who are older and powerful, her story and that of other women start from their physical attributes in a way never important of the men she is a twisted version of a prodigal returned not defined, as none of the women are, except sexually available attractive desired desiring etc she is that male fant pos [...]

This is the 4th Amado book I have read The first was Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, which in my opinion has been the best This book is good, entertaining, and an enjoyable read, but not as interesting as Dona Flor I will probably continue to read Amado as I feel he is a great writer.

Entertaining read for a penny novel Amado s words Missing something that would make it an equal of Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, but I d recommend it for someone who wants to laugh a bit.
