Its future will include cars Henry Ford and Karl Benz could scarcely imagine. They will drive themselves, won’t consume oil, and will come in radical shapes and sizes. But the path to that future is fraught. The top contenders are two traditional manufacturing giants, the US and Japan, and a newcomer, China.Team America has a powerful and little-known weapon in its arsenal: a small group of technology buffs and regulators from California. The story of why and how these men and women could shape the future—how you move, how you work, how you live on Earth—is an unexpected tale filled with unforgettable characters: a scorned chemistry professor, a South African visionary who went for broke, an ambitious Chinese ex-pat, a quixotic Japanese nuclear engineer, and a string of billion-dollar wagers by governments and corporations. “To explain the scramble for the next-generation auto—and the roles played in that race by governments, auto makers, venture capitalists, environmentalists, and private inventors—comes Levi Tillemann’s The Great Race…Mr. Tillemann seems ideally cast to guide us through the big ideas percolating in the world’s far-flung workshops and labs” (The Wall Street Journal). His account is incisive and riveting, explaining how America bounced back in this global contest and what it will take to command the industrial future.

A whirlwind tour of the EV industry's present that moves faster than the industry itselfThis 274-page book traces events that led to the current state of the global electric vehicle industry. Three primary national threads are described in parallel: China’s jingoistic goal to leapfrog western technology, Japan’s charge to use electricity rather than petroleum for fueling its cars, and California’s leadership in environmental regulation. Automotive companies seem to have been following gove [...]

This is a very informative book written by a young man currently vying for the Democratic nomination to run for Congress in my district next fall. I admit that many topics are beyond my full understanding as the development of the automobile industry for the past century is traced. However, the theme is the development of the car of the not-so-distant future, particularly, the electric vehicle and the self-driving vehicle as we fight pollution. Overall concerns with the environment and the econo [...]

Car guys like car books. This book is about the future of cars or the future of robots: take your pick. I like to drive but this book espouses the antiquity of the internal combustion engine. I liked the way Tilleman goes inside Honda, Toyota, Nissan and the nation of China and the state of California. He explains why things have happened to this point and what the landscape of motoring will look like not in fifty years but what will happen in the next ten. Good book. Even for a person who loves [...]

An insanely underrated book. It's such a shame that, even after a year from it's release, this book won't appear on the first page of the search results for 'The Great Race'. This book tells the story of the evolution of electric cars against the backdrop of all the major events that happened in the last 110 years. # The main contenders in this global race are-> The unbelievably resilient Japanese -> The unnervingly giant Americans-> The unusually extravagant Chinese# The ground rules [...]

This is a very relevant book and good overview of the automotive industry. I especially liked the flow of the story and brief highlights about the direction of the car culture beyond the U.S. I am also an avid nonfiction reader. This book did a great job not to lose the reader in too much detail or complex language.

Gives a total recap of the automobile industry and what lies ahead. From Ford to Elon Musk and how Japan and the US might shape the future of EVs. Loved the Fordism concept, Japan's struggle with EV technology and contracts with China, and the journey and fame of Tesla.
