I'm not a great fan of short stories, but being a admirer of Montanari's books, more exactly the Bryne and Balzano series ("Rosary Girls" and specially "Skin Gods" are among the best crime thrillers I've read in my life) I was compelled to spend one dollar in this eBook exclusive to read on Xmas day big mistake, it's really lousy!Ok, I admit that in less than 30 pages it's hard to have some complexity, but this is a total disappointment - we meet young Kevin Byrne back in the 80s (many years bef [...]

Christmas eve 1988. A woman has been brutally assaulted. Covered in blood, she is taken to the ICU in critical condition. Detective Kevin Byrne and his veteran colleague Frankie Sheehan start their investigation. Leads take them to a tavern located in a small Philly neighbourhood called Devil's Pocket. Who is the culprit? Will they find him? This was a very short police procedural story so there was no time for the author to build on the characters. I know that these detectives feature in other n [...]

Loved this short story by Richard Montanari where we meet a young Kevin Byrne, on duty on Christmas Eve. His future partner in the homicide department, Jessica, is just 12 years old and her father is Byrne's boss.A brief but interesting glimpse into the early years of Kevin Byrne.

A short but good read, nice to learn a bit about Byrne's past.A interesting look at Byrne's past, not sure I'd be interested in reading a full book about itefer to read about jev and he's solving cases together

I know this is a short story but it really fell flat for me. At 19 pages it didn't have time to develop any story or substance. The only thing I did like is that it gave me a feel for the detectives. I would like to read a full length book featuring them.

I like to get into new authors by trying short stories. This was a huge disappointment. The most boring conclusion to a crime plot i've ever read.

A short story featuring Kevin Byrne. At just 19 pages it really was a short story, but it was ok and I would like to read a longer novel by this author

It's a very little snapshot into the Byrne/Balzano world. If only all crime could be solved in a night!
