    I'd seen this book referred to on numerous occasions but never felt tempted to get hold of a copy. A feminist study of Beowulf? How could such a passive character as Wealhtheow be a Valkyrie? What rubbish. After reading Fred C Robinson's essay The Prescient Woman in Old English Literature, I suddenly saw that there was more to Wealhtheow than meets the eye and saw the parallels between her and the Valkyrie from Norse texts.     Although sometimes the arguments smack of special pleading (Yrsa would hold a drinking horn; Wealtheow holds a cup; therefore the Beowulf poet intentionally suppressed the horn in order to obscure their relationship?), overall this book offers some fairly persuasive arguments.
